We’ve all been there. Standing in front of the mirror, trying to get that perfect flick, only for one eye to turn out perfectly, or close to, and the other... not so much. So what would help? Picking the right eyeliner for the look (and skill level!) you want to achieve. With that in mind, I'm going to break down 3 different types you can use. Keep reading to see which works best for your eye shape and age too! First up...

Kohl eyeliner: Soft, smoky & easy to blend
Kohl eyeliner is the one you want for a soft, smudgy look. It’s easy to apply and perfect if you love a bit of a rock ‘n’ roll feel (right up my street!). You can put it along your lash line and smudge it out with your fingertip or a brush for an effortless smokey effect. Super easy!
Best for: A soft, natural, or smokey eye. Also great for your waterline! You can use any colour!
Downside? Kohl isn’t the best for super sharp lines, and it can smudge or transfer throughout the day if you don’t set it with a little bit of eyeshadow over the top.
Liquid eyeliner: Sharp, bold & long-lasting
If you love a defined cat-eye, liquid eyeliner is your best friend. It’s very pigmented, (strong colour) dries quickly, and gives the sharpest flicks. Most come with either a brush tip or felt-tip pen for more precise application.
Best for: Sharp wings, dramatic looks, and long-lasting wear.
Downside? It requires a steady hand, and there’s not much room for mistakes. You can easily go from a ‘subtle flick’ into full-blown Amy Winehouse (which is fine if that's what you're going for!)

Cream eyeliner: The best of both worlds
Cream eyeliner sits somewhere between kohl and liquid. It’s softer than liquid but still allows for more definition. You usually apply it with an angled or smaller brush, which makes it much easier to apply. This way you have the option for a precise line or blend it out for a softer, smokey look.
Best for: A bit of everything! It’s great if you like flexibility in your makeup looks.
Downside? You’ll need a separate brush, and it can dry out over time.

Which one works best for your eye shape & age?
Eyeliner isn’t just about the formula you use, it’s also about how it works with your eye shape and features. Here are a few tips to help you find the best fit:
Hooded eyes: A thin, precise line with liquid liner close to the lash line creates lift without taking up lid space. Avoid thick lines, as they can make the eyes look smaller.
Mature eyes: A softer kohl or cream liner is more flattering than harsh, sharp lines. Avoid very dry formulas, as they can emphasis fine lines.
Deep-set eyes: Smudging kohl along the lash line enhances the eyes without making them look too heavy.
Round or downturned eyes: A little flick at the outer corner with liquid or cream liner helps elongate and lift the shape.
Almond eyes: Lucky you! Most eyeliner styles work beautifully! Try experimenting with both soft kohl and sharp liquid looks.
At the end of the day, the best eyeliner is the one that makes you feel confident. Experiment, have fun with it, play with different colours, and don’t stress about getting it perfect. Just keep practicing.
