Like many products on the market, it's become overwhelming to know what to choose when buying a foundation. Where do you even start! A lot of people don't like the feel of them on their skin, others wouldn't dream of leaving the house without the full works. But if you'd like to buy and start wearing a foundation but you're unsure of where to start, I've broken down the basic types you can get, along with the type of finish you should expect.
"What coverage should I go for?"
The answer? It depends entirely on your preference, skin type, and how you like your skin to look! Whether you love a natural, glowing finish or a "flawless", full-coverage look, there’s an option to suit everyone.
1. Sheer Coverage
If you love the look of fresh, dewy skin and don’t want to feel like you’re wearing much makeup, sheer coverage is perfect. This type of foundation is lightweight, allowing your natural skin to shine through. It evens out your complexion slightly but won’t cover redness, blemishes, or pigmentation.
Best for normal to dry skin types, A minimal, everyday look or That "holiday skin" glow
Top tip: Sheer foundations often contain hydrating ingredients (like hyaluronic acid), make them a great choice if your skin is more on the dry side. They’re also ideal for those who don’t like the feeling of heavy makeup.
2. Medium Coverage
Medium coverage is the happy middle ground. It helps smooth out uneven areas, blurs some "imperfections", and reduces redness while still looking like skin. You’ll still see a bit of your natural skin underneath, but it provides more of a polished finish compared to sheer foundations.
Best for: All skin types (oily skin may need a mattifying powder) A “your skin but better” look and evening out skin tone without looking heavy.
Top tip: Medium-coverage foundations are great because they can be built up in areas where you need more coverage or sheered out with a damp sponge or some moisturiser added, for a lighter finish.
3. Full Coverage
If you prefer a more made up look, full coverage is the way to go. These foundations are designed to cover redness, blemishes, and hyperpigmentation, giving a smoother, more even complexion. However, they can sometimes look a little heavier on the skin and may require extra blending for a natural effect.
Best for: Oily or combination skin types. Special occasions (weddings, photoshoots, nights out due to a more even look for photos etc) A "flawless", long-lasting look
Top tip: Full-coverage foundations often have a matte finish, which can make the skin look flat. Adding a little liquid highlighter or using a hydrating primer underneath can help bring life back to your complexion.
How to Choose the Right Coverage for You
Still unsure which coverage to go for? Consider these factors:
Your skin type – Dry skin usually benefits from lighter, dewier foundations, while oily skin often does better with medium-to-full coverage, especially if it’s long-wearing.
Your lifestyle – If you prefer a quick, fuss-free routine, sheer to medium coverage is great for daily wear. If you need your makeup to last all day (or night), full coverage with a setting powder might be the better option. But spend time on your skin prep!
The occasion – Everyday wear? Sheer to medium might be perfect. A special event where you want your makeup to last and look flawless in photos? Full coverage could be the way to go.
